Since we started Young Woofians and have helped thousands of dog owners find the solution to dog tear stains, beard stains and other marks on the fur there is one question we have been asked over and over again.

“How do you apply the treatment so easily? My dog is terrified of the spray/won’t let me though their eyes/won’t sit still”

We thought this would therefore make a great topic for a blog to try and address the issue of your petrified pooches and how we recommend that you desensitize your dog so that apply Happy Tears – or carrying out any kind of grooming is a pleasurable experience for both of you.

If you’ve got a puppy on your hands it’s important to start this from early on – long term that will make things a lot easier for you (and your groomer if you plan to use one) but it’s never to late to start and we’ve had customers who’s dogs have been terrified of having their eyes touched but with a little practice, patience and time they now find the process of applying Happy Tears a calming and enjoyable time.

So what are our top tips for getting your dog used to handling and grooming?

  1. Spend 10-15 minutes, 6-7 times a day (or as often as you can) working on desensitizing your dog
  2. Make it special time for the two of you where you’re not distracted and can really focus on your fur baby
  3. Sit your dog on your lap and calmly stroke the area around the eyes or face, talking soothingly and lovingly the whole time
  4. You can use treats to reward good behaviour

During these first stages don’t introduce a comb or any other tools – just do it all by hand. You are getting your dog used to touching the area and teaching them that it’s not scary and you’re not going to hurt them.

One they are comfortable you can start introducing a comb or the Happy Tears product. With a little patience and time this process will reap rewards.
