Tears are the eyes’ way of naturally clearing out any dirt of irritants and for that reason that they are perfectly normal and healthy. Although this is the case, many people do not like the staining that they leave on a dog’s fur around the eyes and that is why we developed Happy Tears to treat these marks in a safe, effective way.

However, it is important to note that sometimes the eyes produce an excessive amount of tears – or an inability to drain tears effectively – this is a condition called Epiphora and it can be acute or chronic.

Tear stains are more prevalent – or at least noticeable – in white or light-coloured dogs. If you own a dark coloured dog it is therefore important to check their eyes more closely as it may not be immediately obviously if there is a problem.  Some breeds may be more likely to develop to eye problems than others due to their genetic make-up: Shih-tzus, Pekingese, Maltese and Pugs, Poodles and Cocker Spaniels are especially prone.

Although not all tears stains indicate these conditions it is important that you are familiar with your dog’s eyes so you can notice any changes or abnormalities.

These are a few of the medical reasons why Epiphora can occur:

  • Glaucoma
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Eye Infections
  • Exposure to Irritants
  • Teething
  • Ingrowning Eyelashes
  • Inverted Eyelids
  • Shallow Eye Sockets
  • Ear Infections
  • Large Tear Glands or Small Tear Ducts
  • Scarring in the Eye
  • Improper Diet or Stress
  • Allergies

So, you can see how important it is to be familiar with and to look after properly, your dog’s eyes and bring to the attention of the vet any changes or problems that become apparent.

However, Happy Tears dog tears stain remover is a great addition to your grooming routine with it’s all natural, no nasties formula it safe and effective to use on all breeds of dog, on puppies and on pregnant dogs to fight those nasty tear stains and clean the fur around the eyes or on the beard.
