What are dog tears stains and how to remove them?

Tear Stains in Dogs: Causes, Treatment, and PreventionTear stains are brown or red marks that appear under a dog’s eyes.

They are most seen in dogs with white or light-coloured fur but can also occur in dogs with darker fur.

Tear stains are caused by several factors, including: Excessive tear production. This can be caused by several things, such as allergies, infections, or blocked tear ducts.

Inadequate tear drainage: This can be caused by several things, such as a shallow eye socket or an inward-turned eyelid.

Porphyrin: Porphyrin is a pigment that is found in tears and saliva. It can cause the fur around a dog’s eyes to discolour.

  • – Cleaning your dog’s eyes regularly: You can use a bamboo cloth or a small Bamboo comb to remove any gunk or debris and dry clean the eye area.
  • – Use our All-Natural tear removal treatment: Happy Tears
  • – Giving your dog a special diet: There are some dog foods that are designed to help reduce tear production.
  • – Medication: If your dog has an underlying medical condition that is causing the tear stains, your vet may prescribe medication to treat the condition.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your dog’s eyes healthy and free of tear stains.

Common Causes of Tearing in Dogs

Tearing, or epiphora, is a common problem in dogs. It can be caused by a number of factors, including:

Allergies: Allergies can irritate the eyes and cause them to produce more tears.

Eye infections: Eye infections can also cause excessive tearing.

Foreign bodies in the eye: If a foreign object gets into the eye, it can cause irritation and tearing.

Eyelid problems: Eyelid problems, such as entropion (inward rolling of the eyelids) and ectropion (outward rolling of the eyelids), can also cause tearing.

Short-nosed breeds: Short-nosed breeds, such as Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Pekingese, are more prone to tearing because they have shallow eye sockets and small tear ducts.

Diet: A diet high in minerals can also contribute to tearing.

Genetics: Some breeds are simply more prone to tearing than others.

If your dog is tearing, it is important to see a vet to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Once any medical conditions have been treated, there are a number of things you can do to help reduce tearing, including:

Cleaning your dog’s eyes regularly: You can use a Bamboo cloth, or a small Bamboo comb to remove any gunk or debris and dry clean the eye area.

Giving your dog a special diet: There are some dog foods that are designed to help reduce tear production.

Using a mineral filter: If your dog’s water has a high mineral content, using a mineral filter can help reduce tearing.

Grooming your dog’s hair: If your dog has long hair around the eyes, it is important to groom it regularly to prevent it from getting into the eyes and causing irritation.

Use our All-Natural tear removal treatment: Happy Tears

Common Causes of Tearing in Dogs

Tear stains are a common problem in dogs, especially those with white or light-coloured fur. They are caused by a build-up of tears and porphyrins, a pigment found in tears and saliva. Tear stains can be unsightly, but they can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

If your dog has tear stains, it is important to see a vet to rule out any medical problems. Once any medical conditions have been treated, there are a number of things you can do to help prevent and remove tear stains, including:

    • Clean your dog’s eyes regularly. You can use a warm, damp cloth or a commercial tear stain remover to clean your dog’s eyes.

    • Groom your dog’s hair around the eyes. If your dog has long hair around the eyes, it is important to groom it regularly to prevent it from getting into the eyes and causing irritation.

  • Use a natural tear stain remover. There are a number of natural tear stain removers available on the market. These products are safe for your dog and will help to remove the stains without causing any irritation.

Happy Tears is an all-natural tear stain remover that is made with a blend of herbs and essential oils. It is safe for dogs of all ages and breeds and it is effective at removing tear stains without causing any irritation.

To use Happy Tears, simply apply it to a clean cloth and wipe it over your dog’s eyes. You may need to apply it several times to remove all of the stains. Happy Tears is also safe to use on your dog’s fur around the eyes.

With regular use, Happy Tears can help to keep your dog’s eyes clean and free of tear stains. It is a safe and effective way to keep your dog looking their best.

Here are some additional tips for preventing and removing tear stains

– Keep your dog’s water fresh and clean. A high mineral content in your dog’s water can contribute to tear stains.

– Avoid feeding your dog foods that are high in artificial colours and flavours. These ingredients can irritate your dog’s eyes and make tear stains worse.

– If your dog has allergies, treat them with medication or immunotherapy. Allergies can cause excessive tearing, which can lead to tear stains.

– If your dog has a medical condition that is causing tear stains, treat the condition with medication or surgery. Once the underlying medical condition is treated, the tear stains should go away.

By following these tips, you can help to prevent and remove tear stains and keep your dog looking their best.

Keeping it clean and dry is important

There are a number of steps you can take to help treat and prevent the occurrence of tear stains, especially if your pooch is prone to them and all medical issues have been ruled out.

Taking care with day-to-day hygiene and maintenance is vital.

Have your groomer trim the hair close around the eye area to help prevent the accumulation of tears, and always check your dogs eyes for foreign bodies, rogue eyelashes and irritation.

When it comes to the cleaning, cleansing and prevention of tear stains – only ever use safe, topical, all-natural products. Harsh chemicals and ingredients, such as parabens, peroxide, bleach, steroids, or antibiotics should never be used. In particular, any product purporting to treat tear stains that contains the antimicrobial tylosin tartrate should be avoided at all costs.

Other known brands contain the antibiotic tylosin tartrate – a medical drug that has never been approved for use in dogs or cats, nor for the treatment of conditions associated with tear stains. The truth is, there is no quick and easy solution for removing dog tear stains safely and effectively. Many tear stain removers out there may get quick cosmetic results, and It’s tempting to go for the quick and easy solution – but many of the chemicals contained in them end up doing more damage than good.

Many dog owners are too quick to throw in the towel with a treatment before it’s had a chance to work. Antibiotic resistance is just one hurdle to quick fixes – other chemicals can dry out your dog’s eyes, create skin reactions, or cause irreversible stomach issues after years of use. Any solution that gets to the root of the problem, is kind to your prized pooch, and helps prevent tear stains in the long term, is going to take a little time and effort. But like anything – once you get into a routine with a safe, pro-grade stain treatment, you can get lasting results that take very little time to maintain.

Happy Tears is an all-natural dog tear stain treatment

Doting owners of Maltese, Maltipoos and Cavapoos ourselves, over the years we’d tried and tested many products that attempted to tackle this pesky problem. Some would try to cover it up, some to harshly remove, all flattered to deceive. Happy Tears® was born out of frustration – the products available were simply too meek and mild, or too harsh and horrible. We wanted to create a truly best-in-class product that would cure and prevent. Care and cleanse. The sort of product we’d be happy to endorse for human use too. Not a superficial cover-up, or harsh abrasive. We wanted to make that product the best that it could be. We made Happy Tears®.

Happy Tears® = Happy dogs

Two-steps to success

Step One

Begin by using our Tedster Bambo comb (or a comb of your choice, preferably a small non-metal comb) carefully remove any loose debris from around the eye area. Do not drag the gunk or debris down the fur as this will leave a stain exacerbating the problem!Once the debris is cleared, use the Bamboo cloth and gently dry clean the area. Make sure to move the cloth back and forth in a gentle manner to absorb any moisture.Apply the liquid Happy Tears® solution and spray it twice onto the pink applicator provided. With the moistened applicator, wipe down the stained area once, the area needs to be slightly damp and not wet.

Step Two

Dip the applicator into the tin of Happy Tears® powder. Swirl the brush around to coat it with powder and tap off any excess.Use gentle motions to apply the Happy Tears® Powder to the stained area until it is completely dry. You may notice the stain becoming lighter as you apply the powder. If needed, apply a little more powder to the stained area.Using small strokes or small circular motions, blend the powder into the stained area. For optimal effectiveness, apply the powder against the direction of hair growth. Repeat this process daily until the stained area is completely clear, which typically takes around 7-14 days.
